About this artist
Néhémy Jean, known as Nehemy, was born in 1931 and died in 2007. Well-educated at the Teacher Training School, the Beaubrun Ardouin College, and Lycee Alexandre Petion, he joined the Centre d'Art in 1947 under the auspices of Dieudonne Cédor. He was one of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques Gallery's founding members, where fifty members seceded from the Centre d'Art in 1950. He improved his pictorial techniques under V. Pierre-Noel and Georges Ramponeau and his portraiture under R. Brackman and B. Klonis in N.Y.C. He returned to Haiti to help found the Brochette Art Gallery and later his own L'Atelier Gallery. He painted scenes at the Haiti airport, El Rancho, and Choucoune Hotels. He has exhibited in the U.S., Europe, and the Surinam. His art hangs in many private collections. (Biographical info from Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera by John Allen Franciscus) Nehemy Jeans' art is referred to in all significant Haitian art books. He also was an art teacher.
