Renowned Haitian artist Gesner Abelard signed this original vintage 28"x 20" Eve in the Garden of Eden oil painting on board in the lower left corner, c. 1970. It is in good condition, unframed, and belongs to a private collector in New York, from whom it will be shipped. Our gallery will issue a certificate of authenticity upon purchase.  

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on February 22, 1922, Gesner Abelard was a Haitian painter and sculptor. Abelard began life as a mechanic, then studied painting and sculpture at the Industrial School of Port-au-Prince under the painter Humberman Charles. He became a member of the Haitian Centre d'Art in 1948. In 1949, he received a bronze medal at the International Exposition celebrating the bicentennial of Port-au-Prince. His favorite subjects are birds, trees, religious scenes, and scenes of Haitian life in a naive/primitive style. Abelard is believed to be deceased. His art is mentioned in major Haitian art books.
