Collection: Gabriel Leveque (Haitian, 1923-2013)

The Haitian artist, Gabriel Lévèque was born in 1923 and died in 2013. In the early days of the Centre d'Art, co-director Selden Rodman invited William Calfee to instruct the primitive painters in the tempera technique for frescos. The Episcopal Bishop Voegeli, over the objection of higher-ups and the local elite, asked Obin, Benoit, Bigaud, Bazile, and Lévèque to decorate the church. It was a masterstroke, and all five artists have gained greater fame. Leveque's angels were above the main altar in the Episcopal Church, which was sadly destroyed during the Haiti 2010 earthquake.   "The soft colors Lévèque uses are well suited to his holy pictures," says Gérald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens.
