Description

Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue, the late internationally acclaimed Haitian master, signed this vintage painting. This original oil on masonite, signed "J.E. Gourgue" in the lower left corner, in good condition and framed, represents a Vodou scene of seats at the ceremony under a tree with a flame from the Mastandrea family collection in Texas, where the painting will be shipped. Our gallery will issue a certificate of authenticity upon purchase. "Gourgue's determination enabled him to become a master of Expressionism through his drawing, light, and color effects," states Gerald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens.

About this artist

Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue (Haitian, 1930-1996) was one of Haiti's most renowned painters of the 20th century. Gourgue began painting at an early age and eventually had his works exhibited throughout Europe and the Americas. His father was a French psychiatrist, and his mother was said to be a Haitian voodoo priestess.

J.E Gourgue typically painted scenes of rural Haitian life and vodou ceremonies. Gourgue, who had no formal training, often combined flowers, mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and voodoo symbolism in a personal style that combined surrealism and naive art. "He is beyond dispute the leading figure in modern Haitian painting."
