About this artist
Micius Stéphane was born in Bainet, a small village on Haiti’s southern coast in 1912 and died in 1996. Micius earned his living for years a cobbler, a “Sunday sculptor”. In 1946, he met Dewitt Peters and began his painting career at the Art Center. A naïve painter, he renders charming scenes from daily life in Haiti with minute accuracy. He is considered one of Haiti’s eminent contemporary artists. From 1961 to 1979, he exhibited in Germany, the United States, England, Italy, and France. André Malraux sponsored one of his Paris exhibitions. His art is prized by collectors and is in the permanent collections of Musée d’Art Nader and Musée d’Art Haitien of College Saint Pierre, both in Haiti and the Detroit Institute of Arts, in Detroit, Michigan. His children, Peters Stéphane and Edith Stéphane are also painters.
