About this artist

Jean-Claude Castera was born on August 26, 1939, in Pétion-Ville, Haiti, and died in 1992. From 1957 to 1962, Castera studied under Angel Botello Barros in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During the period 1963-1971, his work was exhibited frequently in Purto Rico, notably in a permanent exhibit at the Antillas Gallery in San Juan with Angel Botello Barros, Wilfredo Lam, Siquieros, Coronel, Diego Riviera, Matta, Rodon, Marin, Moya, Goya. From 1975 to 1978, Castera was exhibited in Rome and at the Blanche, Nader, and Marassa galleries in Haiti. His work is also exhibited at Max Ewald’s “showroom.”Castera’s canvases express the rhythm of Afro-Haitian music; he paints libertine dancers in the quintessence of their beauty. (La Peinture Haitieene by Marie-José Nadal and Gérald Bloncourt, pp.146)

“Caribbean mythology prompts Castera to celebrate the beauty of women,” says Gérald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens. Get the Book Now
