Description

This is an original museum piece signed by the late Haitian Master artist Philome Obin (1892-1986). This 24"x 30" painting on board depicts an architectural view of the famous Hospital "Justinien" in Cap-Haitian at the time. It belongs to the collection of Georges S. Nader. HISTORY: Hôpital Universitaire Justinien is the main hospital in the second-largest city in Haiti, Cap-Haïtien. It is located near the Place d'Armes Cathedral in the city center. The hospital is named after Justinien Etienne, a local magistrate who spearheaded and oversaw its construction. Hôpital Universitaire Justinien began as a hospice in 1890 and was later transformed into a hospital in 1920 during the United States occupation of Haiti. Hôpital Universitaire Justinien is a teaching hospital with 250 inpatient beds. Approximately 60 medical residents train in internal medicine, general surgery, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, urology, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, and anesthesiology. With help from the University of Miami, the hospital was the first in Haiti to start a family medicine residency program. The hospital has a laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology services for inpatients and outpatients. The hospital receives some financial support through state and private organizations and can provide free medical care in addition to its fee-based services.

About this artist

Obin was born in Limbe in 1891 and died in Cap Haitian in 1986. He was self-taught and was one of the first Haitian artists who marveled at the world with his naive art. His art is mentioned in all major books on Haitian art and by many art critics internationally. " Obin's concerns with precision and the respect of reality inject a measure of coldness into his narrative works," says Gerald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens. Get the Book Now!
