About this artist

Castera Bazile started to work at the Centre d'art in 1944, helping Dewitt Peter's students with the necessary elements for still-life subjects. He soon developed an interest in flowers and composition, and one day, he started to paint himself. He painted three murals in the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in 1951. By 1955, he had participated successfully in several exhibits at the Art Center and overseas- in the U.S. and Europe. He won the grand prize of the Caribbean International Competition sponsored by Alcoa Corporation and the $1,000 grand prize in a Holiday Magazine contest. His figures are often outlined. In 1966, Bazile died prematurely at the peak of his career.

His art is mentioned in all major books on Haitian art and by many international art critics. In his book Peintres Haitiens, Gerald Alexis describes Castera's art as "instinctive compositions with warm, harmonious hues and the typical sincerity of Haitian folks' expression."
